Central Bank of Egypt Supports the Capacities of COMESA Central Banks on “Incorporating Climate Risks in Micro and Macro Stress Testing”

In continuation of the Central Bank of Egypt’s (CBE) leading role in achieving integration among African central banks, and within the framework of its ongoing cooperation with the COMESA Monetary Institute (CMI), the CBE hosted a training program on “Incorporating Climate Risks in Micro and Macro Stress Testing for Central Banks”. The program was attended by 25 participants representing 11 central banks from COMESA member states, along with a delegation from the CMI.
The sessions – which continued for five days at the headquarters of the Egyptian Banking Institute (EBI) in Cairo – featured discussions, practical examples, experiences sharing of climate risks and the impact of incorporating them into micro and macro stress testing using standard models. The training also covered applications of stress tests to credit, liquidity, climate change, and interbank contagion risks.
The training program included specialized interactive sessions delivered by lecturers from the Macroprudential Sector, the Offsite Supervision Sector, and the Financial Inclusion’s Sustainability Department at the CBE. The sessions addressed the theoretical and practical aspects of integrating climate-related risks into micro and macro stress testing frameworks. They also included discussions on different involvements and practices, and the exchanging of expertise among representatives of participating central banks on the challenges associated with climate risks and their impact on the banking sector and financial stability.
At the end of the program, a set of proposals and recommendations were formulated to deepen the understanding of how integrating climate-related risks in stress tests can impact the operations of COMESA Central Banks. These recommendations will be discussed at the level of central bank governors during their upcoming annual meeting in “Malawi” in November 2026.
